Rationale
The Psycho-Oncology Society of Nigeria (POSON) was established to address the urgent need for psychosocial
care for cancer patients and their caregivers in Nigeria and across Africa. Recognizing that the cancer
journey involves not only medical but also emotional and social challenges, POSON provides a supportive
platform that integrates psychological well-being into cancer care.
Registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on April 24, 2009, and inaugurated in Ibadan on
October 6, 2011, POSON has been committed to training professionals in Psycho-Oncology, conducting research,
advocating for patients’ rights, and mobilizing resources to support individuals in need. In the same year,
the organization gained international recognition as a member of the Federation of Psycho-Oncology Societies
through its affiliation with the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS).
The motivation for establishing POSON lies in the growing cancer burden in Africa and the limited awareness
of the importance of psychosocial care. By integrating counseling, advocacy, training, and research, POSON
continues to strengthen the fight against cancer and improve the quality of life for patients and their
families.
